Extraction socket management
After tooth extraction, the alveolar ridge undergoes horizontal and vertical dimensional changes. Approximately 50% resorption of the alveolar width and height is commonly seen1,2 and this resorption takes place within the first three months3. This can lead to ridge deformation and other complications.
Ridge resorption problems when bridge restoration is the goal
- Gap underneath pontic
- Impaired phonetics
- Impaired aesthetics
- Hygiene problems
Ridge resorption problems when implant placement is the goal
- Insufficient available bone for implant placement
- Need for subsequent invasive GBR treatment

Ridge preservation with Geistlich biomaterials counteracts ridge resorption
The use of scientifically documented biomaterials such as Geistlich Bio-Oss® Collagen and Geistlich Bio-Gide® in ridge preservation can compensate resorbed hard tissue2,3.
- Reduced number of secondary augmentations at implant placement2.
- Superior volume preservation under pontics4.
A regenerative approach including Geistlich Bio-Oss® Collagen and Geistlich Bio-Gide® prevents hard tissue loss following a tooth extraction.
The following cases illustrate both straightforward and advanced approaches for ridge preservation with Geistlich biomaterials. Straightforward cases can be handled by dentists with limited experience on bone augmentation procedures, whereas advanced cases require higher surgical skills.
